Body Basics Grade 6
Cultivating Body Awareness + Confidence
About Body Basics Grade 6
Body Basics Grade 6 deepens awareness to the importance and value of caring for our changing bodies, minds, and social selves. Through a developmentally-aligned and arts-infused approach, students explore not just how bodies change, but how to cultivate a healthy body image and self-esteem, especially in the presence of harmful messages from media and society. Together, we examine how technology and our peers can challenge our relationships to our bodies and self-confidence while learning skills and techniques to boost and protect our self-image. Body Basics Grade 6 is the perfect place for youth to receive evidence-informed, developmentally-aligned, and accurate information about their changing physical, emotional, and social selves in partnership with parents and families.
Through two 6-class semesters designed specifically for the emerging middle schooler, students are able to connect with one another while sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences together. This type of honest sharing normalizes the turbulent times of puberty and adolescence, helps youth feel less alone, and reminds them that they too can do hard things.

Where do classes take place?
All classes take place in or near Hattiesburg, MS. We have partnered with local community spaces to host classes after school, ensuring the space is comfortable, safe, and private. The exact location will be disclosed to parents upon enrollment.
Do parents attend Body Basics classes?
Nope! We have a mandatory parent meeting at the start of the program, ensuring all parents are fully informed on what we will be covering in each class. Parents are also sent class recaps after each class via email and are invited to participate in the Time Together activities sent home with students throughout the program.
Are classes co-ed or same-sex?
Students of any gender are invited to enroll beginning in Body Basics Grade 6. We offer both co-ed and same-sex options beginning in sixth grade, and defer to family preferences when putting groups together.
My child doesn't seem to be showing signs of puberty, but they are the right age to sign up for your programs. Should I sign them up anyway?
Absolutely! Being prepared before puberty begins is the ultimate goal. By enrolling them now, you will both have the resources you need to be ready when the time comes.
Do you talk about sex?
We do not discuss sex directly with youth until Body Basics Grade 8. However, my experience with middle schoolers is that many of them are knowledgable before then, and I regularly support families through those conversations at-home. If I receive questions about or related to sex during class, I typically respond with, “It’s totally normal for you to feel curious about that. Your parent is prepared to answer that question with you after class.” Other times, after communicating with parents, I’ll answer that student’s question one-on-one after class.
I already feel confident about the conversations I've had with my child about puberty. Do they still need this program?
This is such a great question! Thank you for already having these important conversations with your child. Body Basics classes pair well with continued conversations at home and, rather than one cancelling one another out, they tend to enhance the impact of at-home conversations. We encourage all youth to participate, whether they’ve had these conversations before or not.
Now Enrolling!
Enrollment is currently open for Body Basics Grade 6. Enrollment closes once all spots have been filled. Don’t wait to enroll - classes will start in April 2026!
My Teaching Approach
-

Family-Centered
A child’s first health educator is their parent, and they are essential partners in each of our offerings. All families are fully informed prior to the first class and are equipped with the skills, guidance, and resources they need to continue Body Basics conversations at home.
-

Developmentally-Aligned
We’re meeting adolescents not just where they are, but when they are. Our programs are separated by grade level to provide youth with just the right amount of information that they need to thrive. By continuing conversations over time, families can deepen trust with youth as they grow.
-

Evidence-Based
I stay up to date with the latest evidence so you don’t have to. Because adolescence is a time of immense misinformation - which often creates shame in young adulthood - we combine emerging research, pedagogy, parental wisdom, and my 5+ years teaching experience to correct misinformation, build confidence, and affirm youth.
-

Values-Neutral
Values-neutral education allows students to explore and develop their own values in partnership with their families. We honor each family’s values and encourage their integration with Body Basics through conversations at home. This ensures each family can participate in Body Basics alongside the important values that guide their lives.
